CVLAS has 3 offices throughout Central Virginia to help clients meet their legal needs. Households must also have few resources. Seniors (60 years of age or older) can get legal advice, regardless of their finances. Applicants must also meet citizenship requirements. Provides free civil (non-criminal) legal advice and representation to low-income people in the areas of bankruptcy, civil rights, consumer rights, debtors` rights, disability, domestic violence, elderly law, employment, family, foreclosure, health, housing, public benefits, supplementary security income (SSI) and unemployment benefits. Representation and/or legal advice are free of charge for the client. However, customers are responsible for all legal costs incurred. What is an emergency? Walk-in admission is for emergencies. An emergency is: current documents from a court, government agency or subsidized landlord that require a response within four (4) business days; a judicial or administrative hearing within four (4) working days; a legal period of four (4) working days; a lock-out, the cessation of public service or the expulsion of self-help; an imminent extrajudicial execution within ten (10) calendar days; or a recent incident of serious domestic violence.

The Central Virginia Legal Aid Society (CVLAS) does not process all support requests, but never charges a fee for its services. CVLAS does not deal with criminal matters, traffic, personal injury, professional misconduct, property damage or cases that may result in attorneys` fees where a lawyer may receive fees from the other party or recovery.
