Also known as synthetic drugs, synthetic drugs or herbal drugs. These are psychoactive substances (drugs) found in Ireland in shops specialising in drug-related products (establishments selling smoking paper, pipes, etc.), as well as in sex shops and tattoo parlours. They can also be purchased via the Internet. They are sold as an alternative to other drugs such as cannabis, ecstasy, LSD, amphetamines or heroin. Many of these drugs are labeled “unfit for human consumption,” so those who sell and supply them can flout the law and avoid liability for negative consequences or risks. Some of them are legally used in industry and animal care. It should be noted that 64.15% of participants who had symptoms of major depression (n = 34), 12.64% who had mild symptoms (n = 23) and 15.86% without symptoms (n = 23) were polyconsumers. In contrast, 15.09% of those with symptoms of major depression (n=8), 45.05% had mild symptoms (n=82), and 37.24% who had no symptoms (n=54) were not taking medication. However, there are a large number of substances that fall within this type of classification, and not all of them are illegal (although this does not mean that they are harmless and that their use or abuse can have serious consequences). What are legal drugs and what types are there? In this article, we will discuss it. Of course, as we indicated in the introduction that they are legal, this does not mean that they do not represent a danger, since the abuse and / or abuse of them is very dangerous and harmful to health and can cause serious diseases or even lead to death.
Side effects – As with other stimulants, there is a seizure after the euphoria that the drug causes. High doses of amphetamines can cause panic, paranoia and hallucinations. With long-term use, you may develop a condition known as “amphetamine psychosis,” with symptoms similar to schizophrenia. Paranoia can make you violent if you think you are being threatened or persecuted. Heroin is made from morphine, one of the drugs that comes from the opium poppy. It is consumed by injection or smoking, which is called “chasing the dragon”. Although few people consider them drugs, the truth is that they are substances that create a change in brain chemistry that impacts behavior, so they can be considered as such. These are substances with a stimulating effect, which usually produce an increase in brain activation. Of course, its effects are much less important than those of other substances and require large amounts to become dangerous. These are substances with low addictive potential, but susceptible to abuse, which can cause serious damage to the liver, spine, muscles and nervous system, among other things.
It also facilitates the appearance of aggressive behavior. The study, conducted among seniors with internet access and Facebook users®, showed that the use of substances such as tobacco, alcohol and marijuana began in adolescence and adolescence, suggesting the relevance of longitudinal and qualitative studies to know the course of use in this age group and to treat it in a timely manner. The results of this study could serve as a basis for the development of new guidelines in this area that contribute to more effective clinical practice, as depressive symptoms are strongly linked to the use of most legal and illegal drugs, among which the use of sedatives stands out. The data were analyzed with R-Project version 4.03, descriptive statistics were created in the different variables. To identify the differences between the variables, the exact test and the Fisher chi-square test (p< 0.05) were used. The United Nations (UN) drug control conventions do not distinguish between legal and illicit drugs; They only indicate that the use is legal or illegal. In general, the term illicit or illicit drugs is used when it comes to those that are under international control, that may or may not have a legitimate medical advantage, but that are manufactured, marketed and/or consumed outside the legal framework. – But the tools to combat the abuse of these drugs will be different, so that substances with psychoactive effects that are allowed will be called legal drugs, their use is not punishable, although they know their possible effects. This legal status may refer to its use at the leisure level or be designed for other purposes that do not include its consumption to change the psyche and for which it is considered something permitted. These drugs are psychoactive substances, which means they change thinking, feelings, and behavior. Its effects on mental health are unpredictable and there is a high risk of addiction. Due to changes in the density of water and fat in the body in the elderly, drugs are absorbed more slowly, while normal liver function decreases and slows down, so drugs are metabolized more slowly and excreted from the body, prolonging their effect1, 5, 11.
Consumption at some point in life in relation to sex is shown in Table 1, in men the following results were shown: alcohol (98.90%), tobacco (86.26%), marijuana (48.35%), sedatives (45.60%), cocaine (20.88%), hallucinogens (19.23%) and crack or stone (13.74%). Among women, these were alcohol (86.39%), tobacco (73.82%), sedatives (45.55%) and marijuana (16.75%). The drugs that were most used in the past 30 days among women were alcohol (41.4%) and tobacco (31.4%) and among men, alcohol (40.1%) and tranquilizers (20.9%). All of these drugs are legal in some areas, some of them are readily available (e.g., anxiolytics), while others are only legal in very specific areas.
