Teachers do not have the right to later refuse to teach a student who has been convicted of assault or suspended. However, a risk assessment should be conducted before a decision is made on the student`s return to school or class. The secretary of the local club should be asked to give his opinion on this matter. Eviction Intervention Services (EIS) is a non-profit housing organization for low- and middle-income New York residents at risk of eviction. Among other programs and services, EIS offers free legal clinics where tenants can seek advice on housing issues. Funding for all files is determined by the Industrial Relations Committee. Once a decision has been made on the approval of funding, contact will be made with counsel. Federally funded legal consulting firms provide lawyers who are experts in helping low-income people with legal problems. If the charges are related to theft, sexual offences, alcohol, violation of the law (e.g., providing false names), transfer or misuse of funds, the EIA should be sought. If you have a civil law problem but can`t afford to hire a private lawyer, you can still access the legal system through your local legal advice and legal aid organization, which provides free or low-cost legal services to low-income people. Members should note that the EIA does not provide legal representation or funding for case work when the issues under consideration occur when the individual is not a member. The Institute does not pay the fees of lawyers and others if they have been hired without the knowledge and consent of the EIA. If a teacher is arrested and/or detained (the police can now detain a person without legal representation for up to six hours), the teacher is advised not to make a statement and, above all, not to sign a statement until a lawyer has given advice. Pro bono programs match low-income clients with volunteer lawyers who agree to take on their cases for free.
