The Master of Science (MS) educational program in Speech-Language Pathology (Housing) and/or the Doctorate in Audiology (Au.D.) The University of Southern Mississippi`s audiology (housing) educational program is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association`s Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700. Students may choose to complete a three-semester sequence of American Sign Language to meet foreign language requirements. The Speech and Hearing Clinic, Children`s Center and DuBard School are available for students to observe and assist professionals who provide speech and hearing services to people in Hattiesburg and surrounding communities. The Graduate Program in Language Pathology receives an average of 150 complete applications per year; 24-25 students are admitted each year. Students at the University of Southern Mississippi are responsible for knowing and complying with all requirements for their respective degrees as outlined herein. The Master of Science (MS) in Speech-Language Pathology is a five-semester program that includes academic and clinical courses totaling 60 hours. Each student is able to pursue a wide range of clinical assignments with three on-campus and two off-campus experiences, with a focus on schools and medical facilities. Students work with clients from diverse backgrounds, throughout life and in multiple areas of disruption. Southern Miss` School of Speech and Hearing Sciences consists of audiology and speech therapy. Successful completion of the Master of Science (MS) graduate program in speech-language pathology at the University of Southern Mississippi meets the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification requirements for speech-language pathology. ASHA certification is required by Mississippi and most states to obtain a state license to practice the profession of speech-language pathologist or to be employed as a certified/licensed speech-language pathologist.
The University of Southern Mississippi strongly recommends that you contact the appropriate state licensing body in the state or city where you wish to practice or be employed to determine if the program you are considering meets state licensing requirements, as we cannot determine that state licensing requirements are met in states outside of Mississippi. Information about the different licenses for all states can be found on the websites listed below: Conference and seminar topics include adult neurogenetics, articulation, augmentation devices, dysphagia, fluency, language, motor language disorders, and multicultural language problems. The program provides an overview of the production and perception of speech, articulation, fluency, hearing, language and voice. Courses deal with anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms, instrumentation and acoustics, normal and abnormal communication processes throughout life, methods of prevention and principles of treatment. Certified speech-language pathologists assess and treat people with speech, speech, voice, speech and swallowing problems. On-campus and off-campus clinical supervisors hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-S) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and a license from the Mississippi Department of Health. Students must pass the National Speech-Language Pathology Examination (Practice II) to be eligible for the Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC-S) and licensure.
