In addition to studying legal principles, Illinois law students benefit from a variety of learning opportunities that apply the principles to practice. Analytical thinking, problem solving, research, pre-trial and trial skills, negotiation, and interviews are essential skills needed to succeed in the real world. Starting in the first year, students receive instruction and practice in essential legal skills, including client interviews and oral defense. During the second and third years, students “learn by doing” in these live courses on client and professional skills. Because these courses synthesize material that has been studied elsewhere in the program, students and alumni report that these active learning programs are among the most meaningful experiences they have at the Faculty of Law.
